With Lamborghini, it’s hard to separate the bizarre from the practical. Let’s face it. Every Lamborghini is a concept car made drivable on today’s roads. The ‘J’ was said to be a one-off, made by Lamborghini for an individual.

The truth, as told to the television program ‘Top Gear’, was that Lamborghini CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, wanted a crowd-stopper for the Geneva Autoshow. He gave his designers a month. They brought in an Aventador LP700-4 and tore off everything but the front bonnet, fenders and headlights. The single buyer theory came true after an anonymous gentleman bought the “J” after the show for £1.75 million.

The Aventador J doesn’t have a roof or any ability to have a roof, and it doesn’t have a windscreen. The driver and passenger both wear full face helmets. It doesn’t have height (it’s the lowest Lamborghini in history). It doesn’t have windows; at least, not in the way we usually think of windows. There is a narrow strip of glass along the top of the door. The traditional rear-view mirror has become a periscope that pops up when needed.

It has the Lamborghini trademark flamboyantly curved sheet metal with enough impact to stop the heart of a Brazilian oil magnate at ten paces. Under the new skin, the flesh and bones are unchanged from the LP700-4 and include a V12, 6.5 litre engine with 700 horsepower and 509 lb-ft. of torque, all wheel drive and seven speed automated manual transmission. Lucky fellow, both to have the ‘J’ and to have £1.75 million to spend on one car.

McLaren P1

McLaren describes the P1 as a cross between a sailfish, a peregrine falcon and a cheetah. We don’t think those species would ever mate, but elements of each are in the P1. There’s one other odd thing about the P1. It grins at you.

The black fascia curves up beneath the bonnet in an undeniable smile. It’s a bit disconcerting. Moreover, McLaren added and changed body panels to make it look more belligerent. It’s like a mugger laughing at a joke while he takes your wallet. The car debuted at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The car uses normal seating (other McLaren’s put the driver in the middle and add two seats beside and in back) and a rear wheel drive, mid-engine setup.

McLaren installed a practical hybrid system with a 3.8 litre, twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine producing 727 horsepower backed up by a 176 horsepower electric motor for a total output of 916 horsepower and 664 lb-ft. of torque. These two power plants combine to push the McLaren from zero to 100 km/h in less than three seconds, zero to 200 km/h in under seven seconds and zero to 300 km/h in 17 seconds. It’s faster than the legendary McLaren F1. If you’re considering a purchase. Bring £1.1 million. Do it quickly. Only 375 will be made and McLaren has already sold 250 of them.

These are fun, but for the rest of us, we normal people who take our kids to ballet practice and buy milk and cookies at the grocery store, it’s a good idea to shop for used cars online; or at least, research our next purchase before we buy. After all, we don’t have £1million to spend on a ride to work.

Peraves Mono tracer

You may think you saw this design before in a Sci-Fi movie somewhere. The Peraves MonoTracer Jet Bike is an aerodynamic design with speeds that top off at 155 miles per hour. Similar to the controls to a car, the design is a pedal operated accelerator with steering wheel control. The two door, dual seat design is an updated version of the Swiss Econmobile.

Harley Davidson 2020

This is not your traditional one of a kind Harley, but it is still one of a kind. This design will be easy to recognize and retains the company’s well-known air-cooled v-twin powerplant. Other features are a powerful 883CC engine with big wheels and bearings. Those are the only design features the company has kept, however, and the design uses a hubless drive system as its centerpiece.

Bombardier Embrio

Using hydrogen fuel cells and an electric motor for the main wheel power, the Bombadier Embrio emits only water as its fuel by-product. Gyroscopically balanced, the design is mean to be a one-wheeled recreational and commuting vehicle. This robotic unicycle is a “smart,” or robotic to be more precise, vehicle with sensors to balance passengers. With a trigger on the left handlebar to accelerate and turned by shifting body-weight rather than steering.

Hyanide

This all-terrain concept motorcycle looks more like a military tank or high-tech snowmobile than a motorcycle. Using tread rather than wheels, the Hyanide has an advanced turning system making it capable of making sharp, fast turns because the entire frame of the bike bends to make the turn.

Carmakers do it to us every year with their concept cars. They lead us on with promises about driving a car that qualifies as world class art with performance to match, a car that’s dangerous and challenging. Then they bring out something different, a vanilla-flavored car bearing the name of the concept car, but with none of the excitement. They’ve shown us the Heavenly City and given us a ticket to Pittsburgh.

In 1963, General Motors created the Mako Shark, a convertible concept car for the Stingray. It was glorious with external headers coming out of the fenders just behind the wheels, a striking long line from the top of the trunk through the drivers compartment to a pointed nose and curvaceous bulges suggesting performance enhancing goodies. It looked like nothing else on earth.

Then they brought out the real Sting Ray. To get an idea of the feeling of loss created by the real thing, picture a sculpture made of soap of the concept car. Wash you hands with it. What you’ve got left is the real thing. That’s what they did with the Mako Shark. The Sting Ray that Chevrolet sold to the public was nice. It had some enjoyable styling touches, but all of the risk and possibility promised by the concept car was gone.

I’m looking at pictures released by Chevrolet in 2011 of the concept car for the current Sting Ray. It’s classic. The design of the front takes the Corvette coupe, adds a nose that reminds me of Worf‘s carapace on Star Trek, and a mammoth bulge in the middle of the hood, suggesting something in the engine compartment trying to get out. The rear of the car is stunning with outlandish fenders that can barely hold huge tires and a fastback design element from the original Sting Ray flowing back from the windshield into a split rear window. The trunk area (we all know that Corvettes don’t really have a trunk) juts outward with massive ducts on each side to let out heat from brakes glowing cherry red.

The real Sting Ray looks like the concept car was given to someone with a pocket protector and a degree in Accounting to tart up. The aggressive design elements are gone. No more smooth, forceful lines. He likes little design details. There are so many little openings and decorations and add-ons that the car looks cluttered. The jutting trunk is gone. A Sting Ray driving away looks like any other car, except a little more awkward. I usually don’t like it, but I trust it.

Here’s a suggestion for all car makers. Design a concept car then make the damn concept car into the real car. Either that or don’t release any more concept cars. We don’t need the heartbreak.
